Many of these women were able to participate in battle, commonly alongside male samurai. They were members of the bushi class in feudal Japan and were trained in the use of weapons to protect their home, family, and honor in times of war. Significant icons such as Hangaku Gozen, Tomoe Gozen, Tsuruhime, Nakano Takeko, and Hōjō Masako[1] are some of the famous examples of onna-bugeisha.
